There is a difference between security related problems and
other problems.

Security related problems can arise due to events totally
external:
- some researcher in China break an encryption algorithm and
   suddenly the encrypted comm is no longer secure
- after 20 years hardware has become so much faster that
   what could not be brute forced before now suddenly can be
   brute forced

Other problems happen when something change internally. If
absolutely nothing changed then the app would still work as
it has always worked. But things tend to change:
- hardware get updated
- OS get updated
- a requirement to use a newer version of a protocol
- a requirement for a new integration with XYZ
