Given that your email gets sent, I am surprised nobody has mentioned
the possibility that this is simply a bogus/uninitialised exit status.

If you get the numeric exit status and display it in hex, does the
bit pattern contain anything of interest ?

It could be something x86-64 specific or it could be something that
has always been there and on other architectures just happens to give
a success exit status.
