There is also a website that is run www.where2dance.com that has a very accurate listing of what is going on in the area in Puget Sound and Eastern Washington and Vancouver/Portland areas. I dance at a couple clubs. In Renton on the 1st & 3rd Sunday is Sunday Solos - a group for solo dancers, where you don't HAVE to have a partner. On the 2nd, 4th & 5th Sundays I dance at Sunday Plus, and on Mondays am learning A from Monday Squares. There are a lot of clubs in the area, so there are places to dance and lots of variety for every night of the week. I like it. We do have a lot of 'snow birds' in the area. Some of the clubs up here do go dark during the summer months, but not all. Also, to make up for the clubs that do go dark we have LOTS of festivals and state wide get-togethers and weekend dances. Speaking for myself, I am unable to go to all of the activities. I try though, but working sort of prevents that. lol Heather -----Original Message----- From: Anniebplus at aol.com To: Squaredancing at rbnsn.com Sent: Sat, 26 Mar 2005 13:34:11 EST Subject: Re: [Squaredancing] Hi! Seriously, I became a member at the 1986 convention in Baltimore, and at the same convention, the basic ideas for the CDP were concieved and presented. Since then, I had a CDP group going in Hannover. It alway was a small group, and MWSDancers look with disdain at it. But this does not prevent us from dancing. It is organized as "Open Square Dance", i.e. new partizipants are welcome at the start of every evening. (Alas, happened rarely in the past year.) If new people show up, I teach them the dosado, swing, and allemande left. Circle and star are self-evident. Then in the course of the evening, I show either Ladies Chain, or Right & Left Thru, and use only this for that day. And I use a lot of contra dancing. With contras, you do not need seven other people to dance; when you found a partner, that ?s enough. And if somebody is left over, I can jump in. Since the females by far outnumber the males, I bring a bag of blue ribbons to indicate those ladies who dance the gent?s part. Anyone who needs singing call figures for the CDP, can find three dozen at http://www.heinerfischle.de/caller/cdp-sing.htm Since there is no Square Thru in the CDP, but 50% of the "usual" singing call figures start out with a Square Thru 4, these figures might be a surprise even at a MS or Plus dance. I had hoped to find some comments about styling (I'll continue to look), but for now, I'm happy to have found the following excerpts: ******************* Tom Fromm writes: 58. CENTERS IN: Starting formation -whenever there is a couple with their backs to the center of the set facing or standing behind another couple (e.g. eight chain thru, completed double pass thru). The outside dancers step apart as the centers step forward and between them to form a line. STYLING: The active couple should use couple handhold and, if stepping in between couples facing the same direction, join hands in a line of four. If the active couple steps in between a couple facing in the opposite direction, use hands-up position with the end dancers. TIMING: 2 steps. Horst, Bill wrote: I first teach them centers in without the all-too-standard follow up call of cast off 3/4. Instead I use "centers partner trade and then the ends run." (Normal lines) How would "Centers In, Wheel and Deal" work? Say, "Centers In, see your lines?, Wheel & Deal" -- could the dancers dance it? If you wanted to do Centers In, Partner Trade with those doing the Partner Trade being BOTH the RESULTING couples after the Centers In,(instead of just the two center people also doing the Partner Trade) what helper words could you use to make it happen? ...yeh, let's do SOMETHING other than Centers In, Cast Off 3/4. ******************* I'm not a caller, but I've formed some strong opinions about (among other things) styling in square dancing during the last 20 years. Here are three of them: Opinion 1. I'm delighted to see that at least one caller (Fromm) is teaching Centers In with "The active couple should use couple handhold and, if stepping in between couples facing the same direction, join hands in a line of four" instead of the execrable "hook elbows with the outside couple." Our weak club now has a relatively inexperienced caller who tried to teach handholds after Centers In. The class chairman jumped all over him and bullied him into teaching "hooked elbows." I hope no caller ever teaches "hooked elbows" again. Opinion 2: I'm also delighted to see that at least one caller (Holst) is teaching ". . . Centers In without the all-too-standard follow-up call of Cast Off 3/4." Some years ago, a part-time dancer and full-time bozo nearly yanked off my left arm after Centers In followed by several seconds of silence. Opinion 3: Typically, the call Centers In ends up with same sex couples in the line of four, which at Mainstream and Plus usually means the awkward and distracting flip-flopping of inside hands. CallerLab could--and should--provide a great service to dancers by teaching "left palm down, right palm up" for all dancers in all positions at all levels from the beginning. It works really well at Advanced. (I have no idea what the Challenge dancers do.) Thus I get the rooms free as long as I do not charge a fee. But I am allowed to ask for "financial applause". Meanwhile I call for three groups every week, in different parts of the town. About two hours each. At the location of the Monday evening group there is a cafeteria. So after the third tip, I announce a longer break, get me an apple juice, and sit down for about 15 minutes. The location of the Tuesday evening group is dry. Therefore there are only small breaks between the tips. The Thursday afternoon group has a kitchen. There I keep the people on their feet for 45 minutes. Then we sit down for about half an hour with coffee, cakes, and chatting; and five minutes more for dishwashing and a breath of fresh air; maybe not so fresh air ;-) . Then some more dancing (easy). You see, breaks depend on circumstances. I gave a talk at the opening session of this year's Callerlab convention which mentioned Tony's program along with others. Bottom line, we are encouraging people to go out and present square dancing to new people in a variety of ways, not just "take lessons and learn MS". I have reviewed the 2005 National Square Dance Directory for some area clubs, but I do know the directory does not have 100 percent coverage of all clubs. Are there any members on this list, who live close by to this couple who could help them get hooked up with a workshop or another class this summer or even this early Fall before they make their next trip to Florida? Mike Gormley Long Key Squares, Florida From cmbaker at tiac.net Thu Mar 31 11:16:11 2005 From: cmbaker at tiac.net (Clark Baker) Date: Thu, 31 Mar 2005 11:16:11 -0500 Subject: [Squaredancing] Recent Callerlab Convention Message-ID: Several have asked what happened at the recent Callerlab convention. For those who have never attended, or were unable to attend this year's convention, check out the following http://www.callerlab.org/documents/callerlabdocs/Mini_Sdhed- For_Hotel_(4).pdf which will give you the schedule and http://www.callerlab.org/documents/callerlabdocs/DIRECTION(2005)wpd.pdf which will give you detailed descriptions of each session. I know that this tells you what "will" happen instead of "what happened", but it gives you an idea of the types of stuff that is presented and discussed in the interest sessions. You can also see a list of those who received recognition for calling 25 and 50 years. As I have said before, my handouts (Gimmicks, Hexagons, and the PPC Initiative speech) are available at http://www.tiac.net/~mabaker/ I am also happy to e-mail anyone my status report on the definitions committee. I strongly encourage callers to reserve the time and budget to attend the next Callerlab convention (April 9 - 12 in the Admas Mark Hotel in Charlotte, NC). Those "in the know" come 2 days early for the Beginner Party Leader seminars (on Saturday and Sunday). I find the conventions a great way to recharge your batteries and get enthused again about square dancing. If you are a dancer reading this, perhaps you can find a way to assist your caller in attending. I recommend a gift of the convention fee and extra 2 day seminar (~ $230). I am sure that Callerlab would be willing to assist you in this effort. If you are a dancer or caller reading this, perhaps you can find a way to help newer callers to attend the convention. The convention is not just for "old farts" and "good ole boys" -- it is for all of us who love this activity. I hope to see you there. -- Clark Baker, Belmont, MA cmbaker at tiac.net
