Thousands of people along the Gulf Coast have been left homeless. These people need shelter, food, and clothing. It is time for square dancers world wide to unite. Together, we can make a difference. Over the years, square dancers have shown themselves to be some of the most caring people in the world. There is not time to establish a new non-profit corporation for square dancers to donate to, so Grand Square Inc., a US 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, has volunteered to funnel the monies collected. Make your checks out to Grand Square Inc., and CLEARLY mark on the check that the money is to be earmarked for the Square Dancers for Katrina Fund. All donations are 100% tax deductible and ALL of the monies collected will be hand-delivered to the appropriate charitable organization(s). If you like, you can donate using VISA, MASTERCARD, or PayPal via our secure website - http://www.squaredancers4katrina.org/. Make your tax deductible check to: GSI Dancers for Hurricane Katrina Fund 1100 East Morehead Street, Suite 100 Charlotte, NC 28204 The Curlee family (founders of GSI) has donated warehouse space in Charlotte to house all the supplies that we collect. Area Charlotte dancers will provide the manpower to organize everything (handling the warehouse, loading trucks, etc.). If you would like to send packages, you may use the above address as well. Some (not all) of the needed supplies include the following: a.. School Supplies b.. Building Supplies c.. Clothing d.. Medical Supplies - SEALED (Bandages, Aspirin, etc) e.. Non Perishable Food f.. Housing Supplies (Toilet Tissue, Paper towels, Cloth Towels, etc.) g.. Children Supplies (disposal diapers, toys, etc.) TIME IS CRITICAL. Our goal is to send a check and truckloads of supplies to the affected areas on October 3, 2005. We will be in contact with FEMA to find out exactly where to deliver everything, and to determine what organization(s) to give the monies collected. Our goal is to send at least one semi-truck full of supplies and to hand over a check for ONE MILLION DOLLARS. We will be updating the website - http://www.squaredancers4katrina.org/ - on a daily basis to keep everyone abreast of our progress. Please check the site often. We need to get the word out quickly to as many square dancers worldwide as we possible can. If you have a website, please post a prominent link to ours on your page. If possible, send this letter out to any friends you have on the internet. Many of you have already donated to local charities for this same purpose. However, if we, as a square dance community, can come together for the good of all, look at the impact that this may have. Imagine if we can actually write a check for a million dollars... Surely it will be picked up by CNN or one (maybe all) of the major TV networks. Finally, square dancing can be shown in a positive light to a worldwide audience. It is truly a "win-win" situation. We will be doing a wonderful civic deed for people desperately needing assistance, and just MAYBE we'll get some coverage for it as well. Some fund raising ideas: a.. Special fund raising dance - Admission could be money or some type of supplies b.. Donate the proceeds of a regular club dance c.. Collect money at all of your club dances from now until October 1 d.. Solicit money (supplies) from your area business e.. Contact your local or state dance/caller association for a donation f.. Sponsor a club Yard Sale g.. Or you can come up with some of your own.. Our goal is to raise one million dollars in 30 days. Let's show the world that square dancers, in addition to being the nicest people in the world, are also the most giving. If you have any further questions, please email us at info at squaredancers4katrina.org. We will keep you updated via the website. We thank you in advance, Tony Oxendine Grand Square Inc. A group of us have started a fund and supply dirve for the hurricane victims. All of the info can be accessed at www.squaredancers4katrina.org. Donations and support are pouring in. If possible, please send the url to everyone in your address book. Additionally, please put a prominent link on your website to ours. We have a unique opportunity to make a huge impact. With luck and support, we can reach our goal of one million dollars and the semi truck of supplies. If we do, surely the national TV networks will notice, and square dancing could get some great positive national (maybe worldwide) publicity. It is truly a "win-win" situation. We'll be doing a tremendous civic duty helping the less fortunate, and we might get some recognition in the process. It was formed in 1963, in Swarthmore, PA, and danced for about 10 years. Art Seele was the caller and his daughter Betsy (now Betsy Gotta) was just learning to call. The content at http://www.mysquaredance.com/squarewheelers/schedule.asp is rather ordinary, but behind it is an engine that Patty Green built for not-too-techie clubs to run websites. It automatically makes the event disappear from the web page after the date passes. -- Larry Kilgallen From davek at epgvl.com Fri Sep 9 14:27:03 2005 From: davek at epgvl.com (Dave Knapp) Date: Fri, 9 Sep 2005 14:27:03 -0400 Subject: [Squaredancing] Interesting Square Dance Club Web Site I StumbledUpon In-Reply-To: <6.2.5.4.2.20050909074847.02500cc8@rbnsn.com> Message-ID: <001d01c5b56c$14ecb600$79fea8c0@DAVE> Ken, Take a gander at our web site. With all the discussions about the future of Square Dancing and how to get the youth involved, I think that this site is very interesting. Here are some lines from the home page: YOUTH SQUARE DANCE CLUB Cupertino, California This Club is Designed for Youth, Teens and Pre-Teens (ages 8 and up) (parents welcome with their kids) Ken Robinson kenrbnsn at rbnsn.com Hillsborough, NJ _______________________________________________ Squaredancing mailing list Squaredancing at rbnsn.com http://rbnsn.com/mailman/listinfo/squaredancing_rbnsn.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Squaredancing mailing list Squaredancing at rbnsn.com http://rbnsn.com/mailman/listinfo/squaredancing_rbnsn.com Bruce ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Squaredancing mailing list Squaredancing at rbnsn.com http://rbnsn.com/mailman/listinfo/squaredancing_rbnsn.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you are going to use music, tone it down and add a shut off button on your web site. Music should compliment a web site not overpower it. The music doesn't play on Firefox. :-) The animation and marquee are there. The animation is barely ok, but the marquee is distracting. Some of the colors are distracting. Also the default background color these days is white not grey. The main point of this type of web site is to get information out to the (non)dancing public, but if they are driven away by the loud music and garish colors is the site serving its purpose? So to hear what all the commotion was about, I visited your site using Explorer. Typically, music is somewhat distracting, but I do like "Country Roads" :-)))))) I thought your site was well laid out. The colors drag your eye to the important "stuff" - which is why you use colors. Pretty much everything on your home page can be viewed without having to scroll down. Personally, I like the grey background. Most of the "biggie" corporate sites use colored background and colored text nowadays. One suggestion - I'd have the names of the clubs, your name, etc used as a link to their particular site rather than having to click on the url underneath. Thanks for puttinig the Katrina info at the top!!!!! Take Care, Tony Oxendine -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you use a Microsoft product, like Frontpage, there are a couple things it does that only work with Internet Explorer. One of them is music. You may be able to manually edit the HTML tag to work with both. Also, I highly recommend an "off" button for the sound. I am quite often listening to music on my PC while I'm browsing and having a page load with it's own sound is quite distracting. They each use specific tags to handle music files, etc. So it depends on which web creation software the site was created with as to whether you hear the sound or not. R.
