For S/360, some instructions have a length field in the second byte.
EX allows for variable lengths by modifying (a copy of) the instruction
before executing it.
At least some features of the PDP-10 are similar to features on the
IBM 36 bit predecessors to S/360, so XCT doesn't seem so surprising.
I did do some Macro-10 programming, but I don't remember using it.
