Any of _what_? With practically no information about any
of these drives, on what should I base an opinion?

I have an XP1000 with one of these:

Disk ALP2$DQA0:, device type SONY DVD RW AW-Q170A [...]

and it seems to do everything I've asked it to do. I tried a
Toshiba/Samsung "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-162A TS02" drive before
that, but cdrecord had problems writing a DVD with it, so I
risked another $25 (at the local MicroCenter store) on the
Sony drive. If all you really want is CD-ROM capability, then
I'd be at least a little amazed if you could find a modern
drive which didn't work. My notes say that I could boot off a
V7.3-2 CD-ROM in that SH-162A, so it was ok as a CD-ROM drive,
even if I couldn't get it to write a DVD (with cdrecord -- I
believe that I moved it to a Mac, where it worked fine).

Note that I have the IDE DVD-writer in my
spare/experimental XP1000. In my main XP1000, I have a SCSI
DVD-ROM drive:

Disk ALP$DKA600:, device type TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1711, [...]

Which is lots faster than any IDE drive in this system (and
doesn't use the whole CPU to do any I/O), For CD writing, I
have an old external SCSI drive:

Disk ALP$DKB500:, device type YAMAHA CRW2100S, [...]

As usual, many things are possible.
