Or simply do the necessary with the tools available.  I know some of the 
things I did were heavily dependent on the VAX calling standard, little 
endian architecture and DEC language extensions.  Then again, in those 
days parting to a different platform generally meant a rewrite as you 
would also want to expand the applications beyond their original 
business requirement.
