Only if you make it a problem.  I've worked on systems that had only 
Fortran and assembler or C and assembler.  Compilers are expensive! 
Generally, you pick the language that is the best fit to your problem 
space and live with it.  If you are filthy rich, you buy Fortran, C, 
COBOL, PL/1, ADA and any other currently fashionable languages.
