Which is one of the reasons they need to have a public response.

I fear this is the first of many such incidents. As HP continues its
drive to replace all of its IT workers with people from the low
skilled $10/day market, there are going to be a few who used to
"volunteer" on OpenSource which will stoop to attempting extortion in
a vain attempt to get their old job back, Philippe is simply the first
to stoop so low.

That would pretty much be the reason Wikipedia isn't allowed as a
reference for research papers.

I'm guessing it will, if for no other reason that to stem the tide of
liability and PR which will result when more and more such incidents
happen.

You are looking at this as an isolated incident and don't completely
understand the implications. HP has laid off thousands of technical
people in pursuit of the low skilled $10/day labor market. Given
time, many of them will become desperate enough to try this same stunt
to get their old job back, if only briefly. As a publicly traded
company they have to put forth a policy and issue a statement on this
incident. If they don't, when the next such incident occurs, it will
be too late in the eyes of the business press.

People find entertainment in the oddest of places.
