You use stty or setserial to control the serial port characteristics on most
unixes.
screen /dev/device_name should then work - <control>-a is only the default
escape character, it may be defined differently on your system, look for a
.screenrc in your home directory or /etc/screenrc in case it's been changed
n your system
apropos and man are your friends on unix - not as complete as HELP, but a
good source of information none the less.
