   Glad you're looking out for me, but, well, duh.  You seem
to have ignored the crucial step:

   Note: "new".

   Less is not always better.

   In fact, fiddling the cable, and even switching it to a
different SCSI adapter, cable, and power supply didn't rectify
it, so I'm betting on a failing disk drive.  At least it was
pretty slow and painless, as system disk failures go.
