Yes but is is due to the processor, or just going from DDR to DDR2 ???

Food-for-thought: if it is only due to faster memory, then a ton of
money could have been saved by taking a different route. Let's just
say for the moment that the death of Alpha and PS-RISC were inevitable
for whatever reason. Then you only have 4 choices:

1) move to IBM's already developed POWER
2) move to SUN's already developed Ultra SPARC
3) move to a 64-bit extended x86 (wasn't available in 2002 but was
possible if companies would have cooperated)
4) move to a brand new 64-bit architecture called Itanium which will
get the majority of its speed from software still not developed in
2009.

AMD championed option-3 forcing Intel to follow. Intel championed
option-4 knowing AMD didn't have the monetary resources to follow.
