Mmm, do you like to tell this Mr. Stallman please?

star as well as smake are much older than GNU tar and GNU make ;-)

star started in 1982, GNU tar started in 1987
smake started 1984, GNU make started in 1988

GNU tar as well as GNU make have unfixed problems (most of them since more than 
10 years) and the maintainers are not responsive with fixes. There is e.g. a 
problem with GNU tar that causes GNU tar to be even unable to unpack own 
archives under some conditions that still has not been completely fixed.
