Welcome to the Square Dancing discussion Email list!

This email list is for the discussion of modern ("western") square dancing.

Here are some tips on sending messages:

  • When you compose a message, be sure to include a "Subject" line, and as the course of a conversation digresses, change it.
  • Don't include huge long excerpts of the message you are replying to. Everybody has already received a copy of message you're citing, so they don't need to see it over and over again.
It's much better style to conversationally refer to the point you think the person was trying to make, or sometimes include just one or two key lines from their message.
  • Most open-ended questions generate a nice discussion that we all want to hear. But if you are just taking a poll that can be answered with a simple "yes", "no", or "me too", it's better to have people send their votes to you and then post a summary of the results.
  • It's probably best to keep the chatty personal conversations to a minimum.
  • The mail reading software that most people have does not give them the option of doing things like easily skipping over all the square dancing mail if they are too busy to read it. So, while this may seem obvious, make sure your message has something to say.
  • There is a DIGEST mode available, see the list HELP file that can be obtained by sending the line

    help

    to squaredancing-request@rbnsn.com
  • Engage brain prior to keyboard. Big help to your set.(With apologies to Chris/Lee... :-)

Periodically, there have been discussions about making a "News" group
for square dancing. The reason this hasn't ever been done is that you need a minimum number of participants in order for such a group to be sanctioned (and thus carried across the net), and there are only a fraction of the required number of people. We're mentioning this here so that we don't waste our time discussing newsgroups (instead of square dancing) on the discussion list.

Thanks,

Ken Robinson
