Well, for one thing PDA's, cell phones and other forms of mobility was nowhere near the challenge it is today. In addition, while NAT solutions were ok for awhile to handle internal company tcpip addressing, even NAT is becoming a huge challenge when these mobility management challenges taken into the equation.

In addition, cell phone providers are now making their new devices IPV6 mandatory with IPV4 "optional".

Hence, the writing is on the wall.

Reference:
http://tinyurl.com/m8blgk (June 09, 2009) "Verizon has posted specs for any LTE device that will be permitted on its LTE network. IPv6 support is mandated. IPv4 is optional. That's quite a statement, since IPv4 traffic currently dominates the Internet."
