   Speaking of which, has anyone revealed the magic
needed to get from the odd-ball IDE cable to a typical
slimline/laptop optical drive?  Or what is normally in
that slot, if it doesn't use that cable?

   I hooked up an external SCSI DVD drive to get mine
going, but something (cheap and) internal would be
more convenient.

   I just used the serial port to get started.

   I started out using FTP to do the MP updates.
When it got modern enough, I switched to using a
Firmware Update CD.  The result looks similar:
