Hi Kerry,
(Sorry about the other premature reply - hit the wrong button)

So you really are an SOA wolf in 3GL clothing? You little encapsulator you.
Do you recommend basic rejuvenation or advanced rejuvenation? "Wrinkle-Cream
for VMS" perhaps? You're worth it :-)
But couldn't the user-base be forgiven for thinking that you've been a bit
schizophrenic or bi-polar in this thread? Let me quote a little: -
> Yep, I still maintain there is going to be a return to the basics as
> Companies can no longer afford grandiose SOA / "latest rip-n-replace
> craze of the month" distributed programming strategy developed by the
> analyst / university / whoever theorists.
And now you recommend customers invest huge amounts of money in this -
[Grandious SOA / "latest rip-n-replace craze of the month"]?
Still your solution seems to have won "Best *Legacy*-to-SOA Solution: 2006"
and several "Gartner Magic Quadrant" awards so as usual the HP/VMS arse is
covered.
But if nothing else Kerry *please* answer me this: - What the hell were the
WSIT and Axis2 ports for if you and HP/VMS are now telling customers to jump
into Attachmate? If it isn't the Waste of Substantial Investment in
Technology then just what is it good for? When would one use WSIT as opposed
to Attachmate and why would you use Axis2 when your colleagues have spent
several years white-anting it (and WSIT) by porting gSOAP to VMS in their
"free time"?
Do any of you in HP/VMS have the faintest idea of what you're doing, let
alone what your product offerings are? Honestly, what chance does a customer
have?
Anyway, when I said: -
> Just imagine if these same loyal customers could only find a viable way to
>GUIfy and WEBify their rich herritage of 3GL code, business-rules, and
data?
The key word there was *viable*. I'm not gonna spend my time critiquing
whatever you've found in ComputerWeekly/World this week, HP/VMS are
obviously comfortable with their offerings in this space and couldn't give a
toss about any further customer requirements. Sadly, those of us that
actually walk into VMS sites and witness the Green Screen GUIs and FTP
Middleware know a different story :-(
Oh but you also had "advanced terminal emulation" so I guess all VMS
customer needs are met? Don't forget that you've also got ODBC, JDBC and
some other Screen-Srapers.
As usual, tell Ann all bases are covered - full steam ahead, you're all
doing very well :-(
Cheers Richard Maher
PS. Anyone got a reasonable guess of what the combined Bridgeworks/WSIT
SOAP/Toolkit/Axis2 disaster has cost the VMS license-payer so far? Maybe I'm
wrong Kerry, why not bring out you web-links to the customer testimonials?

[snip..]
While I do not have direct experience with these, there certainly are some
commercial products which enable Cust's to web enable screen based app's
today.
