[snip...]
No - I recommend smart IT people actually sit down and really talk to their
various BU staff who can articulate their issues and challenges. Then, smart
IT people will, with truly open minds, determine which strategy and/or tech
is best suited to address these in a timeframe that is in line with what the
BU's are looking for.
1/2 or 1 day workshops are great for this as you can get multiple BU's to
attend and get everyone's feedback in one forum.
In terms of the solutions to be found after this workshop:
It might mean simply adding additional 3GL programming or web enabling an
existing App (Cobol, Basic, PL/1, whatever) or perhaps using a commercial
App (like Attachmate or Ericom or equivalent) or using a connector like
Attunity or using the VMS provided tools to fast track integrating the
traditional App with other .Net or J2EE OO apps in the company.
A good carpenter has many tools in his belt and knows when to use each
one.
A bad carpenter always reaches for the same hammer or saw.
What I have seen lately is that to many carpenters are all to often
reaching for the same saw and/or hammer (SOA / .Net /J2EE religion).
This coming year will be a big return to the basics. Bottom line is no
one can afford grandiose IT initiatives or major changes right now.
