No, after I got the disks appearing (after a reboot that I wanted to avoid) I
played around with various array configurations. At the end I created the
final configuration. Unfortunately there is now one device left over that has
nothing connected to it. Again, I would like to avoid a reboot in order to get
rid of this phantom device.

The hint to make the device unavailable is a good work-around, though.
