Can someone explain _where_ it's happening? (VMS version,
ECOs, hardware type, ...) You, perhaps?

My guess is that the errors are in blocks which are past the
End-Of-File point. DIRE /SIZE = ALL. DIFFERENCES stops when
it gets to EOF, but BACKUP doesn't, so BACKUP complains, but
DIFFERENCES doesn't. I believe that it's fairly common for an
indexed file (DIRE /FULL, look for "File organization:
Indexed, [...]") to have blocks allocated past the (claimed)
EOF.

If there's a good way to avoid the complaints, I don't know
of it. Perhaps moving the restored backup copy into the place
of the original would do it. BACKUP might zero-fill the
past-EOF blocks/bytes, so it might agree better with its own
output than it would with the original file. (Assuming that
the data past EOF have no actual value, of course. Save
everything, I always say.)
