YOu might wish to

DUMP MAIL.MAI/BLOCK=(start=30, count=4) and see what sort of data is in
there. It is possible that it is just the index.

If this is not an image backup, would backup create the indexed file
from scratch or would it really copy the contents raw ? (aka: would the
index in the file be compressed/different with reclaimed deleted
clusters etc etc ? Or would the recreated file be truly exactly like the
one before ?
