I did a VAX install not so long ago after copying the whole
CD to a SCSI disk drive using dd on a unix system.
(It might have been NetBSD running on the VAX.)
I do have a CD drive with block size selection, but it still
wouldn't boot even set to 512.  

SCSI CD-ROM drives aren't that hard to find used, or even
CD-RW drives.  (CD-RW are more likely to have block selection.)
