Yes, another c.o.vms X over Linux thread reminded me of that solution,
and it is working for me, although currently the Availability Manager
crashes if I try to resize a window.

[I think I stopped using remote X connections to my workstation at
some point when I started thinking about the holes in X that make
it vulnerable to keystroke monitoring.  Accessing VMS is OK - it's
my own machine - but anywhere else and I have reservations.  Maybe
that's what that trusted X connection is supposed to be about?]
