mainly homegrown. we're also tightly coupled to custom hardware for which 
we've done our own device drivers.

mostly fortran and c here. the device drivers have moved to c in the
alpha migration.

we're doing realtime stuff, so we'd probably be looking at something
more along the lines of vxworks.
