The famous 512/2048 jumper is only used if you put a CD-R(OM)
into the drive. As soon as you put in a DVD the 512/2048 jumper
is ignored and the drive switches to the 2048 mode VMS cannot handle.
This is been tested with a Pioneer Slot-in SCSI DVD drive.

It might be different with other drives.
