That's the polite version.
The realistic version is that a guild's purpose was to keep the
number of craftsmen limited, thereby achieving maximum income
for the individual members.

And? Is there something wrong with it?
Their counterpart, employers and stockholders, are trying to
squeeze the maximum profit out of their workers, for minimum pay.
