But at what point does Intel and HP announce that since IA64 brings no
special advantage that can't ge obtained with the 8086, there is no
point in continuing to develop IA64 ?

Mr Main had argued that IA64 had the "RAS" as a unique advantage over
the 8086 and that this was very important for business. Looks to me like
that argument has long ago evaporated if the type of features I am
seeing in my new server have been common on 8086 servers for a long time
already.
