But it is part of a single "suite" that is meant to all work together on
the same platform, just like DEC had in the 1980s with a whole bunch of
software working on VAX-VMS.

Gates has has strong leadership to shape his company's products. Olsen
was more of a kind father letting the kids play in the playground to see
what they would come up with. The playground was large enough that
different groups of kids came up with competing products.

Had Gates instilled the same "quality is important" values in Microsoft
from the time he set out to write an operating system to replace DOS, he
might have come out with something pretty good.
