Try PYTHON, PERL or AWK or DCL or TPU or BASIC if you have to.
Fortran would be my last resort, right after Cobol.

Do yourself a favor and spend 2 or 3 hours with Perl  from
http://www.activestate.com/downloads/ on windows, or on OpenVMS if you
like (EISNER, DEATHROW, TESTDRIVE... )
It will put you in a better, forward moving, position. Garantueed.
