Python and Basic are nice. Perl and AWK are a bit cryptic in syntax.
DCL and TPU are great but IMHO Not optimal for this particular task.

I am sure that the Perl solution would be less lines than the
Fortran solution, but you could also argue that Perl is less
readable than Fortran (and that says a lot).

Not job wise. Perl is last decade.
