Who commissioned this report ? This would dicatate the slant of the report.
Coming from Gartner, I found it extremely positive towards VMS, the OS
that was to have been dead 10 years ago according to Gartner.
Coming from HP (via Gartner), the report is neutral about VMS. And when
a vendor can only get a "neutral" rep]ort about its own products in a
sponsored study, it says a lot.
I liked the part where it says:
##
Where HP has "inherited" an Alpha user through the Compaq acquisition,
and there is limited loyalty to the company, vendors such as IBM or Sun
Microsystems will be better-positioned to benefit if there is already
investment in rival Unix versions.
##
Considering that HP has done squat to try to gain new VMS customers and
keeps restricting its comments about VMS to "we plan to support VMS
customers", This is an interesting statement since the vast majority of
VMS customers have been inherited via the Compaq purchase. HP knows that.
