It will work, at least for short distances, on RG/8 or RG/213 cable.
They are a little smaller, but the taps usually go in fine.
Also, for short distances (I would keep it 0.5m or less) you can
use ribbon cable instead of AUI cables. I used to put very short
such cables at the end of plenum rated AUI, which couldn't bend
enough to get onto the back of the computer.
