I think your best bet is to upgrade your lab machine to 8.3.1H1.  If you 
can't do that, see if you can borrow a machine with 8.3.1H1 or one that 
you can upgrade to 8.3.1H1.

If the problem is reproducible you and/or Oracle have a real problem.
