In all fairness, the X11 issue was addressed with a ECO to TCP/IP. So, I
can't blame the VMS engineering group for that one.
The jury is still out on the Macro/Debugger problem.
I did field test V8.4 and didn't find that anything that would impact me
in terms of code that I maintain. Those products were compiled, linked,
installed and ran through all the tests with flying colors, so I was NOT
concerned that there were any major pitfalls in V8.4. It wasn't until I
had to get a new project underway running on V8.4 that I found those bugs
I've announced here.
The VMSINSTAL issue DID affect the former products. I waited for a final
V8.4 release to completely build distribution kits -- you never know what
sneaks its way in from field test to shipping release. This is why I did
not make the discovery of the VMSINSTAL changes until final release. Of
course, as a longtime mothballed utility, I never expected that it would
be horked at this late stage of the game. Notice too that the "Guide to
VMSINSTAL" was not pulled out of the cedar chest and mothball pack for an
update when this functionality was changed! I still haven't seen even a
release note mention.
