This is a false excuse for the dwindling participation in c.o.v. The
real excuse is twofold: reduction in the VMS installed base, and
reduction of people who use NNTP for discussions.
Back in the heydays of VMS, the DECUS symposia around the world
attracted a lot of people because every year, Digital had a TON OF NEW
FEATURES to announce/explain.
Look at the lack of interest for 8.4. IP clustering was supposed to be
the big thing. People aren't discussing it. There is nobody to explain
it to begin with. (for instance, what happens between the EFI "boot" and
the completion of the TCPIP product startup) and how that might impact
DECnet 4 startup etc)
The complaints aren't preventing technical discussions, they are to
mourn the lack of technical discussions. They are not the cause, they
are the result of lack of technical discussions.
But they keep the newsgroup busy enough that it doesn't become dead and
filled with ads for shoes, pills and whatnot.
