They still put patch areas in code?

As you said yesterday, you are somewhat older than I am.
I do remember stories about patch areas, and maybe even saw
some in older assembly code.  

I also remember the stories about patching OS/360 object decks.
Each TXT card has an address and length, and later cards will
overwrite earlier cards.  Sometimes that would require a patch
area, so that there was something to overwrite.

But that was when system code was all written in assembler.
