This applies when the manufacturer sees a future for the product.
The problem with Palmer, Curly, Carly and Hurd is that they have been
convinced that there is no future for VMS, but that the installed base
is very loyal and won't move off. So they continue to provide enough
fund to claim VMS is still being developped, and collect the support
dollars. But they aren't about to start marketing or attemopt to grow a
product for which they see no future.
There is "middleware" within HP management which plays the role of
convincing the COEs that VMS has no future. Stallard, Livermore, and
remember Compaq's "Windows will eviscerate" (what was his name ?).
Stallard and that Compaq guy are gone, but Livermore remains.
Shane Robison (CTO) seems to have clout within HP, and it would be
interesting to hear from his mouth what he thinks of VMS.
