That certainly generated a lot of output.

I've put the full text in the anonymous FTP area on vms.tomwade.eu as
HANG-BOOT-LOG.TXT

 >Has the DSA0 device been mounted ? Is the physical boot
 >disk a member in DSA0 ?

Well the ANALYZE/CRASH showed the DSA0 device existing with $5$DQA1 as
the master member, so I think so.

After the copyright notice, there were errors:

> %EXECINIT-I-LOADING, loading SYS$FILES_64.EXE
> %EXECINIT-E-LOADERR, error loading SYS$FILES_64.EXE, status = 00000910
> %EXECINIT-I-LOADING, loading SYS$XFS_CLIENT.EXE
> %EXECINIT-E-LOADERR, error loading SYS$XFS_CLIENT.EXE, status = 00000910
> %EXECINIT-I-LOADING, loading SYS$XFS_SERVER.EXE
> %EXECINIT-E-LOADERR, error loading SYS$XFS_SERVER.EXE, status = 00000910
> %EXECINIT-I-LOADING, loading SYS$LFS.EXE
> %EXECINIT-E-LOADERR, error loading SYS$LFS.EXE, status = 00000910

910 is "no such file" and I can't find those files on my other server
that is happily shadowing its system disk.

There was also a funny looking

> %READ_CONFIG-I-FOUND_ENTRIES, found 271 entries in config file SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSEXE]SYS$CONFIG.DAT
> %READ_CONFIG-I-ALLOC_MEMORY, requested 40836 bytes, got -24640

It ended with

> %EXECINIT-I-TMVPTES, setting TMV up with its PTEs
> %EXECINIT-I-SVAPTE, setting up EXE$GL_SVAPTE
> %EXECINIT-I-BLD_LOCKID, building the lock id table
> %EXECINIT-I-BLD_RESHASH, building the resource hash table
> %EXECINIT-I-RESMEMALC, performing reserved memory allocation
> %EXECINIT-I-CLRWARM, clearing warm-start flag
> %EXECINIT-I-CLRCOLD, clearing cold-start flag
> %EXECINIT-I-ACTIVESET, joining ACTIVE set
> %EXECINIT-S-CIAO, transferring to the scheduler
> %SWAPPER-I-SHUFFLE, executing SWAPPER initialization code
> %SWAPPER-I-SYSDISK, checking status of system disk

after which it hung.

I appreciate your looking at this - it seems very odd.

Incidentally, to rule out other funny SYSGEN stuff, I did a
conversational boot using a USE DEFAULT command, followed by explicit
settings for SHADOWING, SHADOW_SYS_DISK, SHADOW_SYS_UNIT & ALLOCLASS and
it still hung.

Don't think it is down to hardware failure either, as it happened on two
separate DS10L servers. It wasn't the UPDATE either as a vanilla 8.3
system install gave the same behavior. Weird.
