Thanks for all the info, fellas.

I tried all four drive select jumper setting, with identical results.

Just for hell of it I tplugged into the "fixed disk 1" connectors on
the distribution panel. On *one* occasion SHOW UQSSP gave me

instead of four RD51s. I think the drive select jumper was the default
3-C, but after several restarts with four RD51s again I realised it's
not reproduceable.

I'm pretty sure by this stage that either the RQDX or the RD is a dud.
I have an old XT in the basement (ya nevah know when it'll come in
handy!) which I can use to test the drive, if only to ascertain that
it's recognised by a generic MFM controller.

The hassle to set up a NetBSD box just to run diags (and find out what
I already suspect) doesn't sound worth the while, on top of which I
assume I need another VAX for that, right?
