There is a significant difference here. 5.5-2 was the last "heydays of
VMS" version, and a LOT of VMS customers stopped upgrading because their
platforms were just being maintained and they didn't see the need to
upgrade to 6.0 because 6 didn't bring much new to VAX.
With DOS/Windows, people were begging for a significant upgrade, and
Windows 95 did bring major changes.
Consider that DOS/WINDOWS based cash registers in large chains remained
in use for a very long time, well after Microsoft stopped publically
supporting DOS/WINDOWS and I am sure Microsoft continued to provide some
support for such large scale embedded system installations.
