Not being a TCPIP expert, just a code jockey - the response is
understandable and dissappointing. I have to say that every time I setup a
new version of VMS at home (which I tend to do from scratch) - setting up
TCPIP is always a journey for me because frankly I don't really want to know
how TCPIP works - I just want an IP address, and have the handful of things
I need to work to work (like Telnet). I eventually scribbled down enough
notes on what to setup so that I don't have to re-figure things out every
time I do it - and I know that I have at least half my setup wrong... but
it's functional.
A "VMS TCPIP home setup for a complete network dummy" would have been great
the first time I did this at home (still would be). The comprehensive
documentation is great - but remember that most people turn on their new
Windows PC, plug it into their cable modem, and "magic" happens for them.
That said - asside from a handful of specific notes on my own setup - I
don't have anything to point him to either... and I'd probably be embarrased
to show off the configuration errors I make.
