While I haven't (yet) contributed to this thread, I claim that it is 
simply not true that all critics of Mr Main fit the above description.

It is possible to stand behind something in principle, based on its 
past legacy, its future promise or its current strengths.  However, 
this should not make one blind to real problems.  Reminds me of the 
early space programme---an ambitious undertaking, comparable with VMS as 
far as total ingenuity involved.  However, early test pilots were often 
too gung-ho to point out real problems.
