Unless you or VMS have special needs:
I never found it necessary to upgrade tape drive's firmware.
They should work out-of-the-box for the usual purposes.
You should check, however, whether the dip switch setting
is compatible with your particular OS, as described in the
product manual. I've seen drives refuse to work,
even dragging down the SCSI bus due to a single dip switch
in the wrong position.
