That might not work for BACKUP on tape. And in gerneral I've found
tape support from MS to be nill, you generally have to buy some
product to manipulate tapes.
If the OP had a VMS system, I'd recommend TCOPY. If the OP
knew the tape was made /exchange, any little toy, such as cygwin
dd, could copy it.
There is a vmsbackup.c running around on the 'net, but I don't know
how up to date it is.
