   Nah.  It's clueless.  If you need a network interface
before VMS is up, then you're probably stuck with one of the
recognized 10/100 (EI, EW) interfaces.

That was my interpretation, too.  My console ("show
config") says:

      Slot
       12    16C714E4/601B0E11

Wake me when you find that XP1000 firmware update which solves
all the known problems.  (I'll just hold my breath.)
