Hundreds of pictures, so I definitely need a scriptable solution.

I could compile it for ALPHA, but if so would want the newest version.  
The VAX version is a few years old.  Presumably, it will build more 
quickly on ALPHA (on VAX, it took about 6 hours IIRC).
