In the words of Jobs, we are living in the post-PC world.

What happened in the PC world?  Microsoft, running on Intel or a clone 
of it, is the de-facto standard.  No-one can compete, even with better 
quality.  The same goes for Apple and its various products.  Maybe HP 
realise they don't have a chance and are cutting their losses.
