My guess is that HP might targer x86 running Linux as the platform where
the growth in enterprise applications and services will happen.
>From a pragmatic point of view: if maintaining Itanium costs too many
billions per year and tou want to cut those costs, you need to figure
out how much it will cost to port all 3 operating systems to x86.
Does porting HP-UX to x86 (with the change in endianness) worth the cost
? Will it bring any value to cuistomers that couldn't be provided by
Linux with HP add-ons ?
And should HP really be supporting 3 proprietary OS on top of Linux and
Windows on X86 ?
They probably are trying to develop a strategy to move their
IA64/Alpha/PA-Risc customers over to x86 on Linux. This way, they can
abandon HP-UX, NSK and VMS. But until they have found a way, they want
to keep all 3 on life support to continue to get maintenance/support
revenues.
