Okay, but all that money they spent on HPVM will also be lost like
that, unless they still restrict these operating systems with a
hypervisor or some other measure.  So, once they go x86, won't many
simply switch to other virtualization solutions, like VMware and such
instead?  The typical arguments: They're 'better known' and 'everyone
uses it.'

HP's emphasis and enthusiasm over HPVM doesn't give me the impression
that they're very eager to do that, just now.  But, I could be wrong
of course...  (After all, who would've thought they would throw out
their PC business.)
