We're in the market for a generator at home. Since we're in a
townhouse with attached garage we cannot store gasoline (more than 1
gallon), but I can have a propane BBQ and keep an extra 20 pound full
bottle. A diesel genset would be great since I could store fuel for
it, but they're too heavy for my wife to handle and very expensive for
properly built ones (not no-name chinese). So I think a tri-fuel
Yamaha or Honda; the extra propane bottle will get us through short
outages or until we can get gasoline.....
You could get a couple of 100 lb. propane bottles (type used at residential
construction sites for powering heaters durning the winter months). Some of
the Costco's near me sell them - same diameter as the 20# tanks, and about
as tall as a welding gas cylinder (about $100 each) - or get them from a
local building supply specialty place - United Rentals should be able to
point you in the right direction if they don't have them in your area.
Build a small cedar shed beside the house with some lattice top & bottom to
allow gas ventilation in case there's a leak & add a sloped cedar shingle
roof to keep rain/snow off - at least it looks better that way. Local code
may require a metal enclosure though, which you could also clad in cedar or
plastic trelliswork.
Provide lock access doors to the enclosure. Support the bottles on some
thick plastic shims to delay rusting from the bottom up.
